Parking Day

While I was in Columbus last weekend, I was pointed to a blog by Walker Evans, who runs Columbus Underground. One of the posts there caught my eye: Parking Day 2008. The idea is to draw attention to Downtown Columbus’s 40% surface area of parking lots.

I haven’t had a chance yet to take a map of downtown Youngstown and paint the surface parking red, but I have a feeling it would be a rather overwhelming sight, and I think Parking Day is something we should adopt for 2009. We could just get down to West Federal Street early and take it over. Lay down some sod and park our butts for the day.

According to what I read on the Columbus site, our expenses would be considerably less. They had fees to pay to the meter, but we may still have permits to work out with police. Here’s a snippet from the Columbus setup:

Prizes will be awarded in various categories.

So, brilliant idea. Definitely something to pursue next year.
