Pay Anything, Right Away, No Questions

Here’s how this is going to play out. The White House and its political allies and powerful echo chamber are going to create a lot of noise about pushing a large infusion of cash into the economy. The strategy is to “Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less.” Oh wait, that’s another campaign. I guess this one is “Pay Anything, Right Away, No Questions.”
The plan has been crafted and floated to Congress, and the Democratic leaders are pushing for oversight. Wall Street is sensing the possibility of delay and declined in Monday’s trading. Republicans will seize on this and blame the Democrats for stalling, calling the Democrats reckless and irresponsible, urging immediate passage of the proposed measures without review, reduction, or delay (sound like any other administration-driven legislation to come down the pipe in the last eight years?), and warning that further meddling by “obstructionist” Democrats shows they’re poor custodians of the economy and don’t have the leadership it takes to manage in these tough times.
Remember, you have a voice. Write and call your representatives and let them know what you want to see happen. It’s your government. It’s your tax dollars they’re spending. It’s your legislation they’re deciding. And, as Bill Maher said, “We’re all homeowners now!”

The Times has a good editorial today reiterating these points: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/23/opinion/23tue1.html
