Balulalow

Despite a week of intense work on the new Center for Working-Class Studies site, after a two-week vacation in the south and a return to our early snows I’m definitely in the holiday spirit. I have been practicing carols on the piano for some family sing-alongs to come (as well as a few at the family reunion in South Carolina), and as some favorite tunes have accompanied my week of final content migration and clean-up, I was reminded of a lovely choral piece by British composer Benjamin Britten.

Britten is an interesting and versatile composer who specialized in operas and choral works, though he also wrote compelling symphonic literature, such as The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, aka “Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell.”

The tune that came up at random on my iPod this morning is the lovely “Balulalow,” from A Ceremony of Carols. I had the pleasure of conducting this back in my days assisting Dr. Ron Gould at St. John’s, and I want to share the minute-long diversion with you on this cozy Friday. Enjoy!
