Dutiful Downtown Deed for the Day

It’s official: we’re soccer parents. Tuesday, the kids started soccer practice, so after running the girl to ballet after school, the boy was off to hour-long soccer practice first, followed by half-hour practice for the girl. He’ll have practice twice a week, while she has it once. Games start in late April, right about the time our rehearsals for Easy Street/The Youngstown Symphony Society’s The Music Man will convert to tech week for the performances May 8, 9, and 10.
It’s going to be quite a month.
After I dropped the boy off at soccer practice yesterday–and knowing there would be a few hours before dinner–I stopped at Arby’s for some cheesesticks and a jamocha shake. (Yep, I’m really watching what I eat.) While sitting there reading the news on my iPhone, a woman (20s-30s) standing near me was complaining to her boy-friends that she just hates it here because “there’s nothing to do.”
Heard that before? After a couple of minutes of this, I had to speak up. Surely there would be folks downtown drinking for St. Patrick’s Day, right?
“Did you go downtown Friday night?” I asked.
She replied in predictable–though still shocking–fashion, “I haven’t been downtown in years.”
I tried not to get ruffled. “You really should check out some of the bars there.” I tried to keep it simple. “Go to West Federal Street. Check out Imbibe, Rosetta Stone and The Draught House.”
“I’ve heard of The Draught House,” her friend offered. I smiled.
“Okay, we’ll try it,” she assured me.
Anyone see her downtown last night? She was wearing green…
