Below are pictures from last Saturday’s clean-up and an invitation to this Saturday’s.

VAN SICKLE 1

phil-ryanI’d estimate about twenty-five people showed up and worked to rake, bag, weed, mow and pick up trash from the property on Broadway.

Some arrived as early as 9am and some stayed well into the afternoon. The main thrust of activity was a two -hour window from 10am until noon.

winding-upThe property now looks more cared for, in fact because it is. I have been talking to some people about creating a regular effort–maybe weekly or semi-monthly–where residents know they can start off their Saturday mornings with a property clean-up. It’s going to have to be a regular effort, in order to meaningfully attack the problem. Ideally, there’s buy-in from the residents on that block or surrounding blocks to maintain the property after the initial group clean-up effort has happened. That may be more possible on some blocks than others.

I am glad to see that Resettle Youngstown has taken the lead in this effort, and two weeks in a row we have a clean-up happening on the North Side. Doubtless we’ll take a break for the holidays, but I’m hopeful we’ll continue this approach in the New Year and start to see a visible difference in our neighborhoods.

There’s lots to be done, and we hope to see you there, too! From Melanie:

Thanks to all of you who were able to make it to 264 Broadway on Sat!  It was easy to appreciate the work that we did when I crossed the street to get into my car afterwards. What a difference, success!  Thanks again to Pat and Jim for the yummy lunch at the Unitarian Church.

We would like to continue our efforts as long as the weather permits.  We have decided to meet a few houses down this Sat (Dec 12th) at 10am.  The address is (updated 12/11) 212 Broadway 238 Broadway, and it is right next to the funeral home.  If we had the same turn out that we did on the 5th, we will have no problem making efficient progress.

I have plenty of gloves for this week.  If anyone can bring a broom and dustpan, that would be a great help.

Please shoot me a quick email if you’re planning on meeting this Sat, the 12th at 10am.

Thanks again everyone, for your friendly smiles and hard work last Sat!  Very cool to see so many downtown for the parade too!

Note: There will likely be some activity before 10, as well, as Phil K. and I both have prior commitments at that hour but want to contribute. Come when you can. Do what you can do. Thanks!
